Finding the gap behind square: reading the ring before the bowler runs in
A batter placing the ball into a gap is not reacting to the delivery. He has already decided where the space is and which stroke reaches it.

Why the gap has to be identified early
A batter cannot survey the field during a delivery, because the eyes are committed to the ball from the moment the bowler enters his stride. The information therefore has to be gathered in the interval between deliveries, when the field is being adjusted and the bowler is walking back. What the batter is storing is not a list of fielders but a small number of regions, since the memory available under pressure is coarse rather than precise.
Two or three regions is the practical limit, and a batter who tries to hold the whole field ends up holding none of it. This is why batters look at the field between balls with an intensity that seems disproportionate to what they appear to be doing.
The stroke is chosen for the region
Placing a ball behind square on the leg side requires a different stroke from placing one in front of it, and the two cannot be substituted late. A batter who has identified a gap behind square must decide in advance to use the face of the bat rather than the full swing of the blade. The commitment happens before the ball is released, which is why placement so often fails when the delivery does not match the intention.
The skill that separates the better players is the ability to abandon the plan when the ball is wrong, which requires the plan to be held loosely. A batter who executes the intended stroke against the wrong delivery has found the gap in his head and the fielder on the ground.
What a sweeper does to the whole side
A single fielder on the boundary changes the value of every stroke on that half of the ground, because the four becomes a two and the risk stays the same. The correct response is usually to accept the two rather than to force the boundary, since the fielding side has paid for that concession with a gap in the ring. That gap sits in front of the sweeper, and a stroke played firmly along the ground into it produces a comfortable single or a hurried two.
Batters who ignore the sweeper and attack the boundary anyway are competing against the one arrangement the field is designed to defend. The exception is a short boundary, where the arithmetic changes enough that the aerial route remains worth the risk.
Manufacturing a gap by moving
A batter can create space rather than find it, by moving across the crease or down the pitch before the ball is released. Moving toward the off side opens the leg side, and a fielding side that has set for the batter's stationary position now has fielders in the wrong places. The cost is that the movement is visible, and a bowler who sees it can adjust his line to follow the batter and close the space again.
The contest is therefore about the timing of the movement, which has to be late enough to be uncorrectable and early enough to be completed. Batters who move too early find the bowler following them, and batters who move too late arrive at the stroke without balance.
Why the ring is the real target
Boundaries attract attention while the accumulation of ones and twos through a defended ring is what makes the difference over an innings. The ring is also the part of the field a captain has the least freedom to arrange, since restrictions and boundary protection constrain how many fielders are available. Every fielder moved to the boundary is one removed from the ring, so the two regions are in permanent tension with each other.
A batter who understands this stops treating fielders as obstacles and starts treating the field as a budget the opposition has already spent. Reading which side of that budget is under-resourced is worth more than the ability to hit the ball a long way.
