The catch on the rope: momentum, the relay and the decisions made in mid-air
A boundary catch is usually described as athleticism. It is a sequence of judgements about momentum, most of which are made before the fielder leaves the ground.

The problem is momentum rather than the catch
A fielder running back toward the rope is carrying momentum in the direction he must not travel, and the ball arrives at the least convenient moment. Taking the catch cleanly is frequently the easiest part of the sequence, because the difficulty lies in what the body is doing immediately afterwards. The fielder therefore has to solve a deceleration problem while his eyes are on a descending ball and his feet are somewhere behind him.
This is why boundary catches are lost in the moment after the ball is held rather than in the moment it arrives. A fielder who arrives early enough to be stationary has removed the entire problem, which is why the first few strides matter more than the last leap.
Reading the flight rather than chasing it
The initial step is taken on the sound and the shape of the stroke, well before the trajectory is legible against the sky. A fielder who takes the first step in the wrong direction has to cover twice the distance, and no amount of speed recovers that entirely. Running with the head turned to watch the ball is slower than running to a predicted landing point and then locating the ball late.
The prediction is built from the contact rather than the flight, which is why experienced outfielders appear to start before the ball has been struck. Under lights and against a dark background the prediction matters more, because the ball is visible for a shorter portion of its flight.
The decision to release before the jump
A fielder who realises he cannot stop before the rope has to decide whether to hold the ball and step out, or to release it back into the field. That decision has to be taken before the jump, because a body already in the air has committed to a trajectory that cannot be revised. Holding the ball and throwing it up while airborne is the version that requires the least strength and the most timing, since the release must precede the landing.
The alternative, parrying the ball back into play without holding it, is safer for the fielder and depends on the ball being deflected rather than caught. Choosing between them is a judgement about how much control the fielder has, and misjudging it produces a boundary rather than a dismissal.
Why a second fielder changes the arithmetic
A relay catch converts a problem of momentum into a problem of communication, because the airborne fielder no longer has to solve the landing. The supporting fielder's job is to be inside the boundary and stationary, positioned to receive a ball that may be released in any direction. Standing too close means both fielders occupy the same space and neither can move, which is the most common way a relay fails.
The communication has to happen while both are running, and it consists of establishing who is going for the ball rather than who will catch it. The presence of a second fielder also changes the first fielder's decision, since releasing the ball becomes a genuine option rather than a gamble.
What the boundary itself does to the decision
The distance between the fielder and the rope determines everything, and it is a quantity the fielder has to know without looking at it. Good outfielders establish that distance before the ball is bowled by touching the rope and pacing in, so the position is held in the body rather than the eyes. A fielder who looks down to locate the rope loses the ball for a fraction of a second, and that fraction is usually the whole margin.
Ground conditions matter as well, since a damp outfield changes how quickly a fielder can decelerate and therefore how far out he must start. These preparations are invisible and they determine whether a chance near the rope is a catch or a boundary.
