The counter from a cleared corner: five seconds and four runners
The most dangerous transition in football begins with a defensive header, because one team is arranged for an attack it has just stopped conceding.

Why the situation is so unbalanced
A team attacking a corner has committed most of its players into the penalty area, including the defenders least equipped to run back at speed. The players remaining outside are positioned to defend a counter but are usually outnumbered and are facing the wrong direction when the ball is cleared. The defending side, meanwhile, has its quickest player deliberately positioned near the halfway line for exactly this moment.
A cleared header therefore produces an imbalance that no other phase of the game creates so reliably or so predictably. The imbalance lasts only as long as it takes the attacking side to recover, which is why the value of the situation decays within seconds.
The first contact has to travel
A header cleared straight upward returns possession to the attacking side and cancels the situation before it has begun. The useful clearance travels toward the touchline and into the space behind the advanced full-backs, where the ball can be collected by a runner. Defenders in the box therefore have a target rather than merely a direction, and that target is agreed before the corner is taken.
Where the ball is aimed determines which of the outlet players becomes the receiver, which is why the two are usually paired in advance. A clearance that lands centrally is the least useful of the three, since it drops into the region where the attacking side has left its midfielders.
Eliminating players rather than keeping the ball
The pass that follows the clearance has to remove opponents from the passage, since retaining possession without progress lets the attacking side recover. That usually means a first-time pass forward into a runner rather than a controlling touch and a look, because the touch costs the entire advantage. The receiver has to be moving already, which requires him to have set off while the ball was still in the air over the penalty area.
This is why counter-attacks from corners look rehearsed, and it is why they succeed for teams that appear otherwise passive in possession. A player who waits to see whether the ball is cleared before starting his run has converted a transition into an ordinary attack.
The four runners and what each is doing
The ball carrier is usually running into space rather than dribbling past anybody, since there is nobody to beat until the recovery arrives. A second runner outside him stretches the width of the defence, forcing the single covering defender to pick a line rather than delay both threats. A third runner arrives centrally as the late option, and he is the one who is most often free because the covering players are watching the ball.
A fourth runner supports from behind, and his contribution is to make the backward pass available when the counter is contained rather than stopped. The failure mode is three runners occupying the same line, which allows one recovering defender to defend all of them simultaneously.
How the attacking side protects itself
Leaving players outside the box during a corner reduces the number attacking it, which is a direct trade between two probabilities. The players held back are positioned to intercept the outlet rather than to defend the eventual attack, because interception is the only intervention that works in time. Their positioning is therefore determined by where the clearance is likely to travel, which is a function of the delivery rather than of the opposition.
A side that holds back players but positions them centrally has covered the least likely clearance and left the two most likely ones open. Teams that concede repeatedly from this situation are usually making a positioning error rather than committing too many players forward.
