The final bend of a one-lap race: what changes when the mechanism starts to fail
The last hundred metres of a long sprint are not run more slowly because the athlete has decided to slow down. The movement itself is changing shape.

Everyone is slowing and the differences are small
A long sprint is run at a speed that cannot be sustained for its full distance, which means the closing stages are a controlled deceleration for every athlete. The apparent surge of a runner moving through the field is therefore usually a slower rate of decline rather than any genuine acceleration. This changes how the race should be read, since a runner who appears to be fading may simply be losing speed at the rate everyone else is.
The tactical consequence is that the decisive decisions were made much earlier, in the first half, where the pace determines how steep the decline will be. Athletes who go out too quickly are not punished immediately but in the final stretch, where the cost is paid at the least convenient moment.
The order in which the movement degrades
The first visible change is usually in the arms, where the action shortens and begins to cross the body rather than driving cleanly backwards. That introduces rotation the legs must then resist, which consumes force that would otherwise contribute to forward movement. The knee lift falls next, shortening the stride, and the athlete compensates by increasing the frequency of steps, which is less efficient.
The trunk position changes last and most visibly, with the shoulders rising and the hips dropping, which is the posture spectators identify as tightening. Because the sequence is predictable, coaching in the event concentrates on holding the earliest element rather than on the last one.
Why the bend makes it worse
Running a curve requires a lateral force directed toward the inside of the track, which is generated by leaning and by the outside leg pushing across. That demand is constant around the bend but its cost rises as the athlete tires, since the muscles producing it are the same ones already under load. A runner whose form is degrading loses the lean first, which widens the running line and adds distance without any corresponding gain.
The inside lanes carry a tighter radius and therefore a larger lateral demand, which is the mechanical basis of the differences between lanes. The transition from the bend into the straight is where these effects become visible, because the lateral load disappears and the deficit is exposed.
What the athlete can still control
Speed at this stage is not directly controllable, so the useful instruction concerns posture and rhythm rather than effort. Maintaining the arm action is the most productive single focus, since it preserves the leg action indirectly and is still under conscious control. Relaxing the face and shoulders is a familiar instruction that has a mechanical basis, because unnecessary tension in those regions consumes force without producing movement.
Athletes are also managing their line, since drifting outward in the lane adds distance that cannot be recovered at this point in the race. None of these produce speed; they reduce the rate at which it is being lost, which is the only remaining variable.
Reading the closing stages
A runner who reaches the straight with better posture than those around him will usually finish ahead of them regardless of the gap at that point. A gap opened before the final bend is a poor predictor, since the athlete who opened it has generally spent more than the others have. The most reliable indicator is stride length rather than speed, because a shortening stride precedes the visible loss of pace by several seconds.
Watching the arms is the earliest available signal, and it identifies the athlete who is in difficulty before anything shows in the finishing order. The event rewards patience for reasons that are mechanical rather than psychological, which is why the tactical advice is so consistent across generations.
