Why Retention Rules Shape Squad Continuity

Before a large auction, franchises may retain a limited number of existing players. That allowance determines how much of a squad carries over and how much is rebuilt.

Retention is bought with purse money

Keeping a player costs a set deduction from the franchise's spending limit, usually larger for the first retention than for later ones. Continuity is therefore priced.

A team retaining several players enters the auction with reduced funds and less ability to compete for others. The trade-off is explicit.

This forces a judgement about which players are worth more than the flexibility their retention costs.

The rules deliberately limit dynasties

If franchises could retain everyone, squads would ossify and the auction would allocate little. Capping retentions guarantees that a meaningful pool returns to the market each cycle.

The result is periodic redistribution of playing talent across the competition. Strong squads are broken up by design rather than by decline.

Teams plan around this, knowing that a settled group has a limited number of seasons together.

Right to match adds a second layer

Some cycles allow a franchise to match a winning bid for a former player, effectively reclaiming him at the market price. This softens the loss of retention limits.

Rival teams bid knowing the card exists, which can push prices up or discourage bidding entirely. The card changes behaviour before it is used.

For the player, it can mean returning to the same franchise at a price set by someone else's interest.

Continuity has real sporting value

Retained players know the coaching methods, the home conditions and their roles. A squad rebuilt entirely spends part of a season establishing what a retained group already knows.

Captaincy and core batting or bowling combinations are particularly costly to replace. Franchises usually protect those first.

Uncapped domestic players who have developed within a setup are often retained cheaply, preserving depth without heavy purse cost.

Players negotiate around the rules

A player who expects strong auction demand may prefer not to be retained, since the market could pay more than the fixed retention slab.

Conversely, retention offers certainty. A player recovering from injury or with an uneven recent record may value a guaranteed place highly.

These conversations happen quietly in the weeks before the deadline, and they determine much of what appears on the final auction list.
