Chasing the wide ball on grass: why the last two steps decide the shot
Reaching a ball at full stretch is a problem of deceleration rather than speed, and the surface determines how much of that deceleration is available.

Why the sprint is not the difficult part
Covering the distance to a wide ball is a straightforward athletic task, and most players at any serious level can reach a ball that lands inside the lines. The difficulty lies in arriving in a state from which a shot can be played, which requires the horizontal momentum to be arrested or redirected. A player who arrives at full speed can only hit the ball while still moving sideways, which limits the shot to a defensive block or a slice.
The last two steps are therefore where the shot is determined, since they are the ones that establish the base and the balance. This is why players who look slower can defend better, and why raw speed is a poor predictor of defensive quality.
The braking step and what it requires
The outside foot performs the braking, planting wide of the body and taking the entire load of the deceleration through a single leg. The amount of grip available determines how sharply that can be done, since a foot that slips converts a controlled stop into a slide. Grass offers less grip than a hard court and offers it inconsistently, so the same braking step produces different results in different regions of the court.
Players therefore brake earlier and more gradually on grass, which costs distance and is why wide balls are harder to reach on the surface. The alternative, sliding deliberately into the shot, is available on grass but is riskier than on clay because the surface does not release the foot predictably.
What the shot can be from that position
A player who has braked well and established a base can hit a full stroke, and the crosscourt reply is the one that keeps him in the point. A player still moving sideways can play a slice, which requires less base and travels slowly enough to allow a recovery. The down-the-line reply from a stretched position is the most attractive and the least advisable, since it travels into the smallest target from the worst balance.
The defensive lob remains available and is undervalued on grass, where the low bounce makes an overhead less straightforward than it looks. The choice is therefore constrained by the arrival rather than by the tactical situation, which is why the footwork determines the tactics.
Recovery begins in the shot
A player who completes the shot and then begins to recover has surrendered the time in which the ball is travelling to the opponent. The efficient version pushes off with the outside leg during the follow-through, so the shot and the first recovery step are part of one movement. That is only possible if the braking step loaded the leg rather than merely stopping it, which is another reason the last two steps matter so much.
On grass the push-off carries the same grip risk as the braking step, and a slipped recovery leaves the player static rather than merely slow. The recovery target is not the middle of the court but the bisector of the angles the opponent can now hit, which sits further toward the ball side.
Why the opponent may not hit into the open court
A player who has struck a wide ball has an obvious target in the open court, and the obviousness is what makes the alternative valuable. Hitting behind the defender, back toward the side he is recovering from, catches him at the moment his weight has just changed direction. That option is only correct when the defender has committed to the recovery, which is visible in whether his first step is a push or a shuffle.
On grass the shot behind is more dangerous than elsewhere, since a defender changing direction on uncertain footing loses more time than he would on a hard court. The exchange is therefore not simply about reaching the ball but about how much of the recovery the defender is willing to commit to.
